How Scrap Metal Prices Affect Your Junk Car Value

Scrap car prices put a metal floor under every junk car offer in Indianapolis: figure roughly $150 to $300 for the steel alone on a typical car. Steel makes up about 58% of your car’s weight, whole-car scrap rates run 8 to 13 cents a pound, and every honest offer is built up from that math.

Most price guides will tell you scrap prices “affect” your junk car’s value and then wave you toward a quote form without ever doing the arithmetic. We think you deserve the actual math. At Cash Car Heroes, we buy junk cars across Indianapolis and Central Indiana every single day, and the scrap market is the first line of the calculation we run on every vehicle. So here it is with the calculator open: what the metal in your car pays in 2026, a two-minute formula for your car’s scrap floor, and why a good buyer’s offer should land above that floor — not on it.

What Are Scrap Car Prices in 2026?

Two different numbers get called “scrap car prices,” and nearly every guide mixes them up.

The first is the mill price — what steel mills pay for processed scrap. No. 1 heavy melting steel scrap averaged an estimated $319 per metric ton delivered to U.S. mills in 2025, swinging from $366 in March down to $303 by November (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, 2026). The shredded auto scrap grade that actually comes out of car shredders has traded higher, roughly $385 to $425 per metric ton through 2026 (ScrapMonster, 2026).

The second number is the whole-car rate — what a buyer can pay you for a complete vehicle by weight. In our market, that typically runs 8 to 13 cents per pound. Lower than the mill price, and for a concrete reason: between your driveway and the mill, somebody has to tow the car, drain the fluids, pull the battery and mercury switches, yank the tires, crush the shell, shred it, sort the metals, and freight the output — and still keep the lights on. That gap is not a scam. It is the cost of turning a Buick into furnace-ready steel.

So when you search “scrap car value today” and see a per-ton mill quote, divide your expectations accordingly. The per-pound rate on your whole car is the number your offer is actually built on.

What Is a Junk Car Made Of? (And What Each Metal Pays)

A car is not one commodity. It is a rolling stack of several, each priced very differently per pound:

MaterialHow Much Is in Your CarWhat It Means for Value
SteelAbout 58% of total vehicle weight (Steel On The Net)The bulk of scrap value — sheer tonnage, priced by weight
AluminumForecast to reach about 514 lbs per new vehicle by 2026 (Aluminum Association, 2020); the 15-year-old cars we buy carry far lessWheels, radiators, and engine parts pay several times the steel rate per pound
CopperRoughly 60 lbs in a gas car — about a third of an EV’s 183 lbs (International Copper Association)Wiring harness, starter, and alternator — high price per pound, mostly buried in insulation
Platinum-group metalsA few grams inside the catalytic converterOunce for ounce the most valuable thing on the car
Rubber, glass, plastics, fluidsThe remaining quarter or so of the carRecycled responsibly, but adds almost nothing to your payout

Notice the pattern: the metals that pay the most per pound are the ones there is least of. Steel wins on volume, which is why the steel market — not copper or aluminum — is what moves junk car offers month to month. The dramatic exception is the converter; those few grams of platinum, palladium, and rhodium are worth so much that we wrote a separate guide to what your catalytic converter is worth.

How to Calculate Your Car’s Scrap Value (The Floor Formula)

Here is the two-minute version of the math every buyer runs. It will not predict your exact offer — no formula can — but it tells you the floor no fair offer should crawl under.

  1. Find your curb weight. Check the driver’s door jamb sticker, the owner’s manual, or search your year, make, and model. Most sedans land between 2,700 and 3,500 pounds; trucks and SUVs run 4,000 to 5,500.
  2. Multiply by 0.58. That approximates the steel in the car, since steel is about 58% of vehicle weight (Steel On The Net).
  3. Multiply by $0.08 and $0.13. That brackets the whole-car scrap rate and gives you a steel-floor range.

Worked out across the vehicles we see most in Indianapolis:

VehicleCurb WeightSteel (approx. 58%)Steel-Only Floor
Compact car (Cavalier, Civic)2,700 lbs~1,570 lbs$125 – $205
Mid-size sedan (Impala, Camry)3,400 lbs~1,970 lbs$160 – $255
Full-size pickup or SUV (F-150, Tahoe)5,000 lbs~2,900 lbs$230 – $375

That is where the $150-to-$300 rule of thumb comes from — compacts land a little under it, full-size trucks well over — and all of it is before a single part, wheel, or wire gets counted. Add the aluminum, the copper, and the converter and the metal-only value climbs from there.

One tailwind worth knowing: cars keep getting heavier. The average model year 2024 vehicle came in at 4,354 pounds, just below the highest point on record (EPA Automotive Trends Report, 2026). One catch if you are running the formula above: that is EPA’s inertia weight, which is curb weight plus 300 pounds, so the comparable curb figure is closer to 4,050. The trend is the point either way. As those heavier vehicles age into the junk market, the average scrap floor slowly rises with them. Your 1998 Ranger does not benefit yet — but your neighbor’s 2016 Suburban will.

For how the floor turns into a full offer — condition, completeness, parts demand, and the rest — our guide to what a junk car is worth in Indianapolis walks through all four factors.

Why Do Scrap Car Prices Keep Changing?

Because the steel market never sits still, and 2025-2026 has been livelier than usual.

The big mover was tariffs. In June 2025, Section 232 tariffs on imported steel and aluminum were doubled from 25% to 50% (The White House, 2025). Expensive imports push American mills toward domestic recycled steel — and your old car is domestic recycled steel. Writing in Resource Recycling that May, Craig Takeshige and Kevin Foley, senior vice presidents at Umpqua Bank, put the upside plainly: “Initially, tariffs on metals should help domestic recyclers by increasing demand for U.S. scrap, raising prices and profits.” Their caveat matters just as much. Looking back at the 2018 round of steel tariffs, they wrote that those “also disrupted global trade patterns and increased market volatility” — and expected “similar dynamics will be at play in 2025.”

Volatility is the operative word. Scrap steel moved through a $63-per-metric-ton range during 2025 alone — $366 in March, $303 in November (USGS, 2026). Layer on the normal seasonal rhythm — more scrap flows to yards in warm months, tightening prices; supply thins in winter — and the floor under your car genuinely shifts from month to month.

We will be straight with you about the limits of our crystal ball: we cannot tell you where steel lands next quarter, and neither can anyone else quoting junk cars. What the market cannot change is the machine underneath it. Recycling of automobiles runs at nearly 100%, with North American shredders recovering steel equivalent to about 17 million cars a year (USGS, 2026). Mills will want your car’s steel next year and the year after. The only question is the price per pound that week.

Why Cash Car Heroes Pays Above Scrap Value

Everything above describes the floor. Here is why our offers do not live there.

A scrap-only operation weighs your car and pays metal. Cash Car Heroes is the buying arm of a locally family-owned, fully licensed, bonded, and insured auto salvage recycler — so when we buy your vehicle, the usable parts get a second life at The New Country Auto Parts, our sister salvage yard, backed by a 30-day warranty. The engine, transmission, aluminum wheels, straight body panels, and that valuable converter all carry resale value on top of the steel — roughly 86% of a vehicle’s material content ends up recycled, reused, or recovered (Automotive Recyclers Association), and the sellable slice of that gets priced into your offer up front.

Gold Nissan Altima with front-end damage awaiting pickup, its engine and parts still worth more than its scrap weight

In practice, that is the difference between a $180 scrap-weight quote and a $450 offer on the same Impala. Our junkyard price guide shows the 2026 ranges by vehicle type, and if you want to see what separates a $500 car from a $1,000 one, the junk car price tiers breakdown maps it with example vehicles.

The honest exception, same as always: a stripped shell with no engine, no converter, and no wheels really is worth its weight and nothing more. If that is what we see, we will say so — but most cars people call “worthless” are nowhere near that empty.

Should You Wait for Scrap Prices to Go Up?

Our take: no — and we say that knowing a higher market would pay us more too.

Run the numbers. The steel market’s entire 2025 range was $63 per metric ton. A typical car carries roughly a ton of steel, so a full swing of the market moves your car’s metal value by around $63. Meanwhile a car sitting in an Indianapolis driveway is depreciating in ways the market never reverses: rust eats the body panels, mice eat the wiring, seals dry out, and catalytic converter thieves do not wait for favorable commodity conditions. Lose the converter and you are out hundreds — five market swings’ worth — overnight.

A complete car sold today beats a rougher version of the same car sold into a slightly better market next spring. That is not sales talk; it is the same math from the formula section, run with a pencil instead of a hope.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a junk car worth in scrap metal alone?

For most cars, the steel-only floor runs $150 to $300. Multiply your curb weight by 0.58 to estimate the steel, then by 8 to 13 cents per pound. A 3,400-pound sedan works out to roughly $160 to $255 — before aluminum, copper, the catalytic converter, or any resalable parts are added.

What is the scrap price per ton for cars right now?

No. 1 heavy melting steel averaged an estimated $319 per metric ton delivered to mills in 2025, and shredded auto scrap has run about $385 to $425 per metric ton in 2026 (USGS, 2026; ScrapMonster, 2026). Sellers do not get mill prices, though — whole-car rates typically run 8 to 13 cents per pound.

Why do scrap car prices change from week to week?

Scrap steel is a traded commodity, so mill demand, import tariffs, and seasonal supply all move it. Prices swung about $63 per metric ton during 2025 alone (USGS, 2026), and the 50% Section 232 steel tariffs added both domestic demand and volatility. Yard rates for whole cars follow those swings with a short lag.

Are trucks and SUVs worth more as scrap?

Yes, by a wide margin. Scrap value is priced by weight, and a 5,000-pound pickup carries nearly twice the steel of a 2,700-pound compact — a steel floor of roughly $230 to $375 versus $125 to $205. Truck parts also stay in higher demand, which lifts a parts-aware offer even further above the floor.

Should I wait for scrap prices to rise before selling my junk car?

Usually not. A full market swing of $63 per metric ton changes a typical car’s value by well under $100, while rust, weather, and converter theft can strip hundreds of dollars of value while you wait. If the car is complete now, selling now almost always nets more than timing the steel market.

Do junk car buyers pay more than scrap value?

Parts-aware buyers do. Cash Car Heroes resells usable parts through our sister salvage yard, so engines, transmissions, wheels, and converters get priced into the offer on top of the metal. That is why our offers on complete vehicles routinely beat scrap-weight quotes — backed by a 4.8-star rating across 1,219+ Google reviews.

The Floor Is Set by the Market. The Ceiling Is Set by Your Buyer.

Scrap metal prices decide the minimum your junk car is worth — around $150 to $300 in steel for most vehicles in 2026. What you actually get paid depends on who is buying. A scale pays the floor. A buyer with a parts operation behind it can pay for everything the scale cannot see, and the whole process takes four steps.
